Getting Comfortable Promoting Your Podcast

Whether you’ve been podcasting for a few months or a few years, constant promotion is important. While we all know of great ways to promote your podcast, how comfortable are you with putting your work out there? I’m sure we’ve all had some self-doubt surrounding our show or its content but that doesn’t change the fact that someone needs your story. If you’re still learning how to put yourself out there, take some tips from 2020 Podfest Multimedia Expo speaker Bruce Wawrzyniak.

If You Don’t Ask, You’ll Never Know

Have you been dying to promote your podcast on a certain platform but have been too nervous to shoot your shot? If so, learn from this story that Bruce Wawrzyniak told during his session 20 Ways to Promote Your Podcast.

Wawrzyniak ended up having his podcast promoted on a billboard for a local law firm. How did he make that happen? He asked! He knew that the billboard was near a very busy intersection in his city and felt like it would be a great place to expose potential listeners to his show. He simply asked the law firm to promote his show and they did.

If you’re looking for promotion, you might have to think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need, especially when it comes to your show.

Get Used to Being in the Public Eye

One thing I’ve noticed about most podcasters is that we’re mostly introverts. While we might bring all our energy to the mic, it might not always translate face to face. But in this industry, you can’t always stay behind the mic, especially when coming to the forefront can boost your popularity.

If you know you’re an expert on your particular podcast topic, why not try public speaking? Public speaking is a great way to slip your podcast into a larger conversation and help a brand new audience learn who you are. If you’re especially passionate about your content, start speaking locally. You never know how positively it could affect your show.

Promoting Yourself with Awards

If your podcast has won an award, we need to know about it! Showing off your excellence doesn’t have to be seen as “flexing.” Just like public speaking, showing yourself as a reliable source of knowledge brings credibility to your show.

Even if you haven’t won an award yet, make sure you’re putting yourself in a position to. If you’re looking for ways to nominate your show and put it on the world’s radar, check out this list of awards programs.

In 2020 it’s time to get comfortable with putting ourselves and our shows in the spotlight. Putting your podcast in a position to be recognized by a different audience might take some measures you might not be 100% comfortable with but it’s worth it to expand your reach. If you’re still a little shy about promotion, just consider how stepping outside of your comfort zone could benefit your show's journey. Get out there and get seen!
