Every podcast host knows the feeling of being inundated with guest request. Its in some cases a GREAT feeling because it can mean that your building a platform that others want to be a part of. However in a lot of cases its just people that want to be seen. As podcasting is breaking into a new reputable media outlet a lot of people see it as a free opportunity to gain promotion and increase their Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

I know as podcast host we can sometimes struggle to find guest so we take the bait; but I would encourage you to refrain from doing this. Your audience can tell when a guest does not align with the platform and in turn it can impact your listnership. On the other hand we can equally be guilty of this very same thing, especially in our infancy stages of building our platforms.

4 tips to pitch like a pro

  1. Do your research: Find out what the shows about and if possible why the host started the show. This provides you with information to know how to develop your pitch. Most podcast have an introductory episode that tells you about that season and what their theme is.

    • Listen to past episodes to make sure your pitch an idea hasn't already been showcased on their platform

    • Look over their social media pages to get to know the host better to ensure the conversation would flow; no one wants to listen to two strangers who don't seem to vibe well.

  2. Pick a compelling topic: I know many people tend to think that what they have to share is valuable; however, the question should be "is it valuable for this audience"? This is why it's important to do your research, this helps to ensure that you as well as the podcast are staying true to your respective brands.

    • Find out who their audience is and what their interest are and base your topic around it.

    • Don't say you can speak on anything that is by far the best way to get no response. People want to know what their platform can benefit from and no one wants to create a topic for you.

  3. Add Value: This ties into picking a compelling topic, but its saying make sure you stand out. What is unique about you? What do you have to offer that other people would want to hear about?

    • This could be your journey or personal story that pulls people in and makes them want to hear more. But make sure its true and something only you have.

  4. Be Specific: Don’t send something generic and ask that the host call you. This comes across as a telemarketing pitch rather than someone whose truly interested in the platform.

    • State exactly what you will speak about

    • Why you choose the platform

    • What you hope the audience will gain

    • What you’re hoping to achieve

Its important to speak on other platforms as its a great way to cross promote, but make sure you don't make the mistake of sending out generic blanket guest request that keep falling on deaf ears. Take your time and the right opportunity will present itself.
