Making the Switch: Blogging to Podcasting

Crossing over from blogging to podcasting is something that a lot of creatives have considered. In this era, we have so many different ways to create community and reach an audience. Since podcasts are extremely popular, former and current bloggers are trying their hand at this new medium and, honestly, I think it can be a great idea. It can be done fairly easily but there are a few things you should think about first.

The biggest challenge with moving blogging to podcasting is remaining consistent with both, that is if you're still choosing to do them at the same time. A podcast is yet another platform that you will have to grow and nurture if you want it to eventually bring you income or opportunities.

The best part of crossing over is that you'll have an audience to bring with you. Having a group of people who are already familiar with you and are ready to consume your content can put you ahead of the game.

Transcriptions

Funneling your existing audience to your podcast could be easy but keep in mind that an established audience doesn't guarantee listenership. Some people like to consume media in certain ways. They might find reading a blog easier than listening to an hour-plus long podcast. A great idea would be to transcribe your podcast to text. If you’re interested in taking specific quotes from your episode you can use Descript or Sonix for automatic transcription. FYI, this can also help with SEO if you use specific keywords.

Cross Promotional Content

Another idea is to start a conversation on one platform and continue it on another. For example, if you create an episode about relationships, it's likely that you may not cover everything you'd like in 30 minutes to an hour, so you can dive deeper into the conversation on your blog. Ask your guest if they’d be willing to do an interview exclusively for your blog. You can ask a different set of questions so that you don’t have a repeat of your episode. You’re still giving both audiences the same content but differently. This gives your audience a chance to engage with you on both platforms and helps you create a larger community.

One of my favorite ways to engage both my audiences is to include my latest episode in my blog’s weekly newsletter. Think about it, some of your newer blog subscribers may not know of your podcast yet so a weekly reminder can help convert them from readers to listeners.

Call To Action

Lastly, don’t forget to add a “Call To Action” in your show. If you want your listeners to read your blog, all you really have to do is ask. I tend to save mine for the end of the show. I let listeners know to follow both my social media pages (one for blog, one for the pod) and I drop the URL to my website. It’s a very simple tactic that some may forget but it’s the easiest!

If you're considering venturing into podcasting from blogging, the transition can be easy as long as you're willing to engage two audiences at once. Keep in mind that some people may choose one platform over another but you can still create a larger audience by integrating your blog and podcast. Don't be afraid to try a new venture in 2020!
