Tips From a Podcast Producer

Author: Dayana Preval

In 2019, there were an estimated 86 million podcast listeners in the United States. This number is projected to increase to 132 million by 2022. What does that mean to you? It means more job opportunities and more avenues for creatives like yourself to monetize in the podcasting industry. Maybe you’re interested in breaking into the podcasting world, but you don’t want to be in the limelight of being a host. There are many roles in podcasting that are just as important as being the voice of a podcast; for instance, the producer.

What does a podcast producer do though? Well, they wear many hats. Producers are in charge of overseeing the production of the episodes (seasons). Podcast producers assist with pitching new ideas, finding guests, research, and most importantly they oversee the audio production and quality. Basically, a podcaster producer is the wingman that you didn’t know you needed.

I had the opportunity to interview Tyeal Howell (@tyeal) producer of the xoNecole Happy Hour podcast, who provided some helpful tips to those who may be considering becoming a Podcast Producer.

1. Do your Research

Listen to other Podcasts. Listen to their format. Research and learn the technical and analytical parts of the production process. Look for pages and groups on social media like WOC Podcaster or Blk Pod Collective for support. Take your time to learn what you enjoy about the podcast process, so you can work on completing this goal with each episode. Here are some questions you should ask yourself as you’re developing your goals.

  • How do you want the podcast to sound and flow?

  • Will there be a teaser?

  • Is there a guest in every episode?

  • What are the transitions like?

  • Is it heavily revised or is it raw?

  • What will the audience take away from each episode? What do I want my audience to feel and do?

  • How will this content change their perspective?

2. Take a Leap

Understand your niche, do your research, and just go for it. With each episode, you can get more specific and tweak as you go.

3. Marketing

Sometimes, when we focus on one platform, we forget about the other platforms, which have the potential to reach. Thinking outside of the box when it comes to marketing is a must! How can you utilize LinkedIn or Facebook for your brand? It doesn’t hurt to also include a video so people can see the production experience.

For those considering a new career path in podcasting, there are so many avenues to contribute. The industry is only growing, and what may have started out as a hobby can turn into a lucrative career. We just need creatives like you to add your perspective, so don’t give up and press on!
